  • Biodiversity & Nature | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein

Access resources and exchange opportunities to address biodiversity challenges. Biodiversity & Nature Everyone on the planet is dependent on ecosystem services, from the food we eat to the water we drink and the air we breathe. Biodiversity forms the basis of our social and economic well-being, yet a triple planetary crisis - that of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution - is raging. Due to human activities, six out of the nine planetary boundaries have already been transgressed, leading to an unprecedented rate of ecosystem deterioration and putting 1 million species at risk of extinction . Biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse now rank as the second-largest long-term risks for businesses . Humanity is waking up to this problem. In the words of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, “we must end the merciless, relentless, and senseless war on nature”. Companies play an important dual role when it comes to biodiversity: on the one hand, many companies and economic sectors are dependent on the conservation of biodiversity. On the other hand, they can protect and preserve this basis of life by acting responsibly. European regulations and standards (e.g. CSRD, Taxonomy or CSDDD) and global agreements such as the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) set a clear path to a world living in harmony with nature by 2050, with specific expectations for business. Companies need to transform their business models, starting with assessing their impacts and dependencies on nature, and implementing credible nature strategies that will provide co-benefits for climate, biodiversity, and society. This transformation could create $10.1 trillion of annual business opportunities and 395 million jobs by 2030 . • Anti-Corruption | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein

We offer resources and a platform for exchange & dialogue to support companies in preventing corruption. Anti-Corruption Corruption exists in various forms in almost all companies, industries and countries. Increased business and transaction costs, distorted competition and reduced economic growth are just some of the consequences. Through compliance and adherence to the rules, companies can act against fraud, bribery, extortion and other forms of corruption. As value chains become more complex and diverse, and we see a range of challenges being integrated including the connections between human rights, labour issues, environment and corruption, businesses need to understand the risks and drivers of corruption — and how to address them within their organizations. The Tenth Principle of the UN Global Compact therefore calls on companies to take a stand against all forms of corruption. Against the backdrop of increasingly demanding anti-corruption regulations in countries around the world, corruption also increasingly represents a legal and reputational risk for companies. Investors are also paying more attention to corruption as a potential risk that destabilises internal company structures and increases transaction costs. The UN Global Compact and its partners therefore offer resources and platform for exchange and dialogue at national and global level to support companies in preventing corruption. • Supply Chains | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein

Access resources that assist you in developing more sustainable supply chain practices. Supply Chains Corporate supply chains are bigger and more complex than ever before. Open markets have enabled companies to source materials and outsource production to suppliers in developing and emerging economies. When done right, this can deliver significant benefits to companies in the form of reduced costs and enhanced profitability and shareholder value. It can also contribute to much needed economic and social development, resulting in higher standards of living for millions of people. Therefore, a company’s entire supply chain can make a significant impact in promoting human rights, fair labour practices, environmental progress and anti-corruption policies . However, supply chain practices can be an organization's biggest challenge because of their scale and complexity. Successful managers must think beyond short-term financial considerations to build relationships that can deliver long-term value along the entire supply chain. This includes incorporating sustainability issues into the company’s sourcing and purchasing practices. The UN Global Compact encourages companies to make sustainability a priority from the top of the organization. If the chief executive sees the supply chain as an extension of their workforce and community, the company can set expectations for best practices across its supply chain. These can include key areas such as selection, training, auditing, and remediation . Doing so promotes a broader understanding within an organization of how decisions made, beyond procurement, can affect the supply chain. For example, legal staff, product developers, and marketing all can have an impact. In addition, companies must look at their supply chain as a whole, and consider the suppliers that may have the most significant challenges to address. To help, the UN Global Compact we develop guidance and resources listed below to assist companies in developing more sustainable supply chain practices. • Labour & Decent Work | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein

We offer you initial starting points, support, and guidance on labour & decent work topics. Labour & Decent Work In addition to human rights, the labour standards of the International Labour Organization (ILO) are an essential component of decent work. These include freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining, the elimination of forced labour, the abolition of child labour, the prohibition of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation as well as occupational health and safety. The Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact take up these standards in Principles 3 to 6 and formulate a clear requirement for companies to respect the core labour standards. Against the backdrop of increasing legal requirements, many companies are faced with the question of how they can adequately address labour law risks in their supply and value chains. However, it is also worthwhile for companies to engage with core labour standards beyond the legal framework. A commitment to core labour standards can improve your supplier relationships, make supply chains more resilient, reduce risks and increase your attractiveness to applicants. • SDGs| UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein

We support companies in the implementation of the SDGs through various formats such as e-learning, tools, and training programmes. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS In 2015, all 193 member states of the United Nations adopted a plan for achieving a better future for all — a total of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs characterize the sustainability debate at national and international levels. As a global goals system, the SDGs provide a common language and a compass for the challenges of the 21st century. The implementation target year for these is 2030. In addition to the commitment of politicians and civil society, the business community is also required to master these challenges. The private sector plays an enormous role in tackling these global challenges. Companies must increasingly leverage their resources to advance the SDGs. There are only a few years left to implement the 2030 Agenda. In view of the slow progress to date, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for a ‘Decade of Action’ at the beginning of 2020 and mandated the UN Global Compact to mobilize the business community. The UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein is responding to this call by supporting companies in the interpretation and implementation of the SDGs through various formats such as e-learning, tools, and training programmes. • SOCIAL | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein

The business community has a responsibility to uphold human rights and labour standards both in the workplace and more broadly along its entire value chain Human Rights The idea of human rights is as simple as it is powerful: That all people have a right to be treated with dignity. Businesses often impact the human rights of their employees and contract workers, workers in their supply chains, the communities around their operations and even the end users of their products or services. Whether directly or indirectly, they impact virtually the entire spectrum of internationally recognized human rights. As a result, companies have both a responsibility and an opportunity to advance human rights across operations, supply chains and beyond. Is your company able to know and show that it supports and respects the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights, and that it is not complicit in human rights abuses? • Just Transition | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein

The UNGC helps businesses to get started in planning for a just transition. Just Transition A just transition ensures that environmentally sustainable economies are promoted in a way that is as fair and inclusive as possible to everyone concerned, creating decent work opportunities and leaving no one behind. It aims to ensure that the transition to net-zero emissions and climate resilience is orderly, inclusive and just. Businesses have a crucial role to achieve a just transition: Private sector support for a just transition contributes to environmental goals, as well as economic growth and social development, through robust company practices, social dialogue, advocacy and partnerships . As key players in shaping the transition to a lower-emission and climate-friendly economy, companies can make an important contribution to ensuring that the social and human rights implications of this transition are also taken into account: For example, the International Labour Organization (ILO) expects 78 million new jobs to be created by 2030 as a result of investment in the circular economy, but also 71 million jobs to be lost. The commitment to a just transition therefore makes it possible to tackle key issues of human rights and environmental due diligence in parallel. In addition, measures to ensure a just transition also contribute to better management of the impact of emissions reductions, increased social support for climate action and sustainability and good stakeholder relations. Advancing a just transition is a priority area for the UN Global Compact. Business action on just transition begins from a foundation of responsible business conduct and respect for human and labour rights, supported by the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact . Building on the guiding principles of just transition established in the International Labour Organization’s Just Transition Guidelines, the UN Global Compact helps businesses to get started in planning for a just transition. • Ocean Stewardship | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein

Implement successful water stewardship with our useful resources such as e-learnings, publications, and exchange opportunities. Ocean Stewardship Oceans are crucial to the well-being and prosperity of humankind - whether for the production of food, energy, raw materials or transport. They play a critical and unique role in addressing the twin crises of biodiversity and climate change that threaten our very existence. But the oceans are in urgent need of protection and restoration. Covering some 70% of the earth’s surface, oceans are threatened by rising temperatures, acidification, extraction and depletion of resources, and pollution in many forms. Research shows ocean mitigation solutions could reduce the greenhouse gas emissions gap by as much as one-fifth as we seek a path to limiting global temperatures to a 1.5° C increase by 2050. Businesses can often have a direct or indirect impact on the oceans and have a responsibility to work together towards sustainable ocean management. By doing so, they can both reduce their impact on the oceans and create new business opportunities in the long term. In collaboration with over 300 stakeholders, the UN Global Compact has developed nine Sustainable Ocean Principles that provide companies with a framework for responsible business practices. By signing the principles, companies can set an example and receive a framework for integrating ocean-related challenges into their strategy. To support you in developing and implementing successful ocean stewardship, you can find below useful resources such as e-learnings, publications, and exchange opportunities.
