- Living Wages | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein
We offer you initial starting points, support, and guidance on the topic of living wage. Living Wages Through their commitment to living wages, companies can enable workers worldwide to enjoy a decent standard of living. Labour poverty caused by low wages is a global problem and is widespread in different sectors. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), in 2019, more than 630 million workers worldwide - almost one in five, or 19 percent of all employees - did not earn enough to lift themselves and their families out of extreme or moderate poverty. Companies can use their influence along their supply and value chains to advocate for living wages across all sectors and enable a decent standard of living for workers worldwide. In addition to making an important social contribution, living wages also represent an investment in core businesses, value chains, and the broader operating environment for many companies. They also enable companies to fulfill their human rights obligations better. This is because legislation is increasingly demanding that companies pay decent wages. Benefit from the many resources provided by the UN Global Compact to advance your living wage efforts. - The Ten Principles | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein
Learn about the Ten Prinicples of the UN Global Compact in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. THE TEN PRINCIPLES of the UN Global Compact Corporate sustainability starts with a company’s value system and a principles-based approach to doing business. This means operating in ways that, at a minimum, meet fundamental responsibilities in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption . Responsible businesses enact the same values and principles wherever they have a presence, and know that good practices in one area do not offset harm in another. By incorporating the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact into strategies, policies and procedures, and establishing a culture of integrity, companies are not only upholding their basic responsibilities to people and planet, but also setting the stage for long-term success. The Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact are derived from: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights , the International Labour Organization’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work , the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development , and the United Nations Convention Against Corruption . Principle 1 : Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and Principle 2 : make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses. Principle 3 : Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining. Principle 4 : the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour; Principle 5 : the effective abolition of child labour; and Principle 6 : the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation. Principle 7 : Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges; Principle 8 : undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and Principle 9 : encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies. Principle 10 : Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery. Resources on the Ten Principles Click on the tabs to access the relevant resources. Climate Global emissions are at their highest level in human history and continue to rise. Today, climate change is impacting economies, supply chains and communities around the globe, with the most vulnerable populations at the frontlines of the crisis. The good news is that we still have time to act. The environmental principles of the UN Global Compact provide an entry point for business to address key environmental challenges. - Supply Chains | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein
Access resources that assist you in developing more sustainable supply chain practices. Supply Chains Corporate supply chains are bigger and more complex than ever before. Open markets have enabled companies to source materials and outsource production to suppliers in developing and emerging economies. When done right, this can deliver significant benefits to companies in the form of reduced costs and enhanced profitability and shareholder value. It can also contribute to much needed economic and social development, resulting in higher standards of living for millions of people. Therefore, a company’s entire supply chain can make a significant impact in promoting human rights, fair labour practices, environmental progress and anti-corruption policies . However, supply chain practices can be an organization's biggest challenge because of their scale and complexity. Successful managers must think beyond short-term financial considerations to build relationships that can deliver long-term value along the entire supply chain. This includes incorporating sustainability issues into the company’s sourcing and purchasing practices. The UN Global Compact encourages companies to make sustainability a priority from the top of the organization. If the chief executive sees the supply chain as an extension of their workforce and community, the company can set expectations for best practices across its supply chain. These can include key areas such as selection, training, auditing, and remediation . Doing so promotes a broader understanding within an organization of how decisions made, beyond procurement, can affect the supply chain. For example, legal staff, product developers, and marketing all can have an impact. In addition, companies must look at their supply chain as a whole, and consider the suppliers that may have the most significant challenges to address. To help, the UN Global Compact we develop guidance and resources listed below to assist companies in developing more sustainable supply chain practices. - Child Labour | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein
We offer you initial starting points, support, and guidance on child labour topics. Child Labour At the beginning of 2020, 160 million children were still subject to child labour . Child labour is a form of exploitation that is a violation of a human right and it is recognized and defined by international instruments. It is the declared policy of the international community and of almost all Governments to abolish child labour. Child labour is damaging to a child’s physical, social, mental, psychological and spiritual development because it is work performed at too early an age and deprives children of their childhood as well as their dignity. They are deprived of an education and may be separated from their families. Children who do not complete their primary education are likely to remain illiterate and never acquire the skills needed to get a job and contribute to the development of a modern economy. Consequently, child labour results in under-skilled, unqualified workers and jeopardizes future improvements of skills in the workforce. Central to this is our call to companies to step up their due diligence on human rights and to identify, prevent, mitigate and account for all adverse human rights impacts in their operations and value chains, which will help tackle child labour and forced labour. Making a real impact will require adopting a holistic approach and collaborating with all stakeholders. Developing awareness and understanding of the causes and consequences of child labour is the first step that a company can take toward action against child labour. This means identifying the issues and determining whether or not child labour is a problem within the business. Companies sourcing in specific industry sectors with geographically distant supply chains need to be particularly vigilant. However, child labour also exists less visibly in developed, industrialized countries where it occurs, for example, in some immigrant communities. The UN Global Compact supports companies of all sizes and from all sectors to take specific actions that contribute to ending child labour in their operations and supply chains. - Diversity, Equity & Inclusion | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein
Access a wide range of resources that support your DEI efforts. Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Non-discrimination is rooted in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights upon which international human rights principles are founded. However, one in six people worldwide experience discrimination in some form. Inequality threatens long-term social and economic development, jeopardizes social cohesion, harms poverty reduction and causes disparities in opportunities and outcomes, impeding economic efficiency. Promoting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) throughout business operations is an important step in tackling inequality and eliminating discrimination worldwide. According to Principle 6 of the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact, discrimination in employment and occupation refers to any distinction, exclusion, or preference which has the effect of placing certain individuals in a position of exclusion or disadvantage in the labour market or the workplace because of their race, colour, religion, sex, disability, political opinion, national extraction, social origin or any other attribute which bears no relation to the job to be performed. Diversity, equity and inclusion are different but complementary concepts. A business is required to implement all three aspects to reap the full benefits of a diverse, equitable and inclusive workforce contributing a range of skills, knowledge, and experience. Workers need to be able to choose their employment freely, develop their full potential and reap economic rewards based on merit. Embracing a diverse, equitable and inclusive workforce is good for business. DEI initiatives enhance creativity and innovation, broaden talent attraction and retention, increase employee engagement and enhance reputation. The UN Global Compact offers a wide range of engagement opportunities to support your DEI efforts. - Water Stewardship | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein
Implement successful water stewardship with our useful resources such as e-learnings, publications, and exchange opportunities. Water Stewardship Water is the most important resource on our planet - both for humans and ecosystems. Access to clean water is a human right and is also hugely important for economic development. Megatrends such as the growing world population, the rising global standard of living, and the associated increase in demand for water from households and agricultural and industrial production are increasing the pressure on freshwater resources and leading to overuse in many places. Increasing variability in water availability resulting in global warming further exacerbates this problem, as does increased pollution. Water consumption is not only an ecological issue but can also pose a business risk, for example, due to supply or production bottlenecks or rising production costs resulting in water scarcity . Water pollution by suppliers or upstream suppliers can also lead to risks for business activities, for example, due to fines resulting from breaches of the law and other legal consequences or loss of image due to negative media reports. Nevertheless, water stewardship has so far been treated less strategically and risk-related in most companies than, for example, the management of energy and greenhouse gas emissions. Companies have a lot of room to improve water management and use water resources sparingly. As water is a local resource, its management must take into account the available sources, the quality of local water reserves, and the different users in the water catchment area. Therefore, risk analysis is the starting point for any strategic approach to water management, based on which an appropriate water management strategy can be developed and successful measures implemented. To support you in developing and implementing successful water stewardship, you can find below useful resources such as e-learnings, publications, and exchange opportunities. - Just Transition | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein
The UNGC helps businesses to get started in planning for a just transition. Just Transition A just transition ensures that environmentally sustainable economies are promoted in a way that is as fair and inclusive as possible to everyone concerned, creating decent work opportunities and leaving no one behind. It aims to ensure that the transition to net-zero emissions and climate resilience is orderly, inclusive and just. Businesses have a crucial role to achieve a just transition: Private sector support for a just transition contributes to environmental goals, as well as economic growth and social development, through robust company practices, social dialogue, advocacy and partnerships . As key players in shaping the transition to a lower-emission and climate-friendly economy, companies can make an important contribution to ensuring that the social and human rights implications of this transition are also taken into account: For example, the International Labour Organization (ILO) expects 78 million new jobs to be created by 2030 as a result of investment in the circular economy, but also 71 million jobs to be lost. The commitment to a just transition therefore makes it possible to tackle key issues of human rights and environmental due diligence in parallel. In addition, measures to ensure a just transition also contribute to better management of the impact of emissions reductions, increased social support for climate action and sustainability and good stakeholder relations. Advancing a just transition is a priority area for the UN Global Compact. Business action on just transition begins from a foundation of responsible business conduct and respect for human and labour rights, supported by the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact . Building on the guiding principles of just transition established in the International Labour Organization’s Just Transition Guidelines, the UN Global Compact helps businesses to get started in planning for a just transition. - Biodiversity & Nature | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein
Access resources and exchange opportunities to address biodiversity challenges. Biodiversity & Nature Everyone on the planet is dependent on ecosystem services, from the food we eat to the water we drink and the air we breathe. Biodiversity forms the basis of our social and economic well-being, yet a triple planetary crisis - that of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution - is raging. Due to human activities, six out of the nine planetary boundaries have already been transgressed, leading to an unprecedented rate of ecosystem deterioration and putting 1 million species at risk of extinction . Biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse now rank as the second-largest long-term risks for businesses . Humanity is waking up to this problem. In the words of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, “we must end the merciless, relentless, and senseless war on nature”. Companies play an important dual role when it comes to biodiversity: on the one hand, many companies and economic sectors are dependent on the conservation of biodiversity. On the other hand, they can protect and preserve this basis of life by acting responsibly. European regulations and standards (e.g. CSRD, Taxonomy or CSDDD) and global agreements such as the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) set a clear path to a world living in harmony with nature by 2050, with specific expectations for business. Companies need to transform their business models, starting with assessing their impacts and dependencies on nature, and implementing credible nature strategies that will provide co-benefits for climate, biodiversity, and society. This transformation could create $10.1 trillion of annual business opportunities and 395 million jobs by 2030 . - Regulations & Reporting | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein
We supports participants in the evolving regulations landscape. Regulations & Reporting Reporting to stakeholders in a transparent and public manner is fundamental for companies committed to sustainability. There are several powerful drivers of non-financial reporting that are pushing companies to act responsibly and report on their actions: investors are considering environmental, social and governance (ESG) information in their strategies. Non-financial information is shaping the decisions of consumers, local communities and civil society organizations that are all expecting greater transparency from business. Once only a voluntary activity, there is a trend towards mandatory non-financial reporting. The UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein offers information and guidance on current regulatory and sustainability reporting, such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), in different formats.
