Implement successful water stewardship with our useful resources such as e-learnings, publications, and exchange opportunities. Water Stewardship Water is the most important resource on our planet - both for humans and ecosystems. Access to clean water is a human right and is also hugely important for economic development. Megatrends such as the growing world population, the rising global standard of living, and the associated increase in demand for water from households and agricultural and industrial production are increasing the pressure on freshwater resources and leading to overuse in many places. Increasing variability in water availability resulting in global warming further exacerbates this problem, as does increased pollution. Water consumption is not only an ecological issue but can also pose a business risk, for example, due to supply or production bottlenecks or rising production costs resulting in water scarcity . Water pollution by suppliers or upstream suppliers can also lead to risks for business activities, for example, due to fines resulting from breaches of the law and other legal consequences or loss of image due to negative media reports. Nevertheless, water stewardship has so far been treated less strategically and risk-related in most companies than, for example, the management of energy and greenhouse gas emissions. Companies have a lot of room to improve water management and use water resources sparingly. As water is a local resource, its management must take into account the available sources, the quality of local water reserves, and the different users in the water catchment area. Therefore, risk analysis is the starting point for any strategic approach to water management, based on which an appropriate water management strategy can be developed and successful measures implemented. - Living Wages | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein
We offer you initial starting points, support, and guidance on the topic of living wage. Living Wages Through their commitment to living wages, companies can enable workers worldwide to enjoy a decent standard of living. Labour poverty caused by low wages is a global problem and is widespread in different sectors. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), in 2019, more than 630 million workers worldwide - almost one in five, or 19 percent of all employees - did not earn enough to lift themselves and their families out of extreme or moderate poverty. Companies can use their influence along their supply and value chains to advocate for living wages across all sectors and enable a decent standard of living for workers worldwide. In addition to making an important social contribution, living wages also represent an investment in core businesses, value chains, and the broader operating environment for many companies. They also enable companies to fulfill their human rights obligations better. This is because legislation is increasingly demanding that companies pay decent wages. Benefit from the many resources provided by the UN Global Compact to advance your living wage efforts. - Labour & Decent Work | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein
We offer you initial starting points, support, and guidance on labour & decent work topics. Labour & Decent Work In addition to human rights, the labour standards of the International Labour Organization (ILO) are an essential component of decent work. These include freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining, the elimination of forced labour, the abolition of child labour, the prohibition of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation as well as occupational health and safety. The Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact take up these standards in Principles 3 to 6 and formulate a clear requirement for companies to respect the core labour standards. Against the backdrop of increasing legal requirements, many companies are faced with the question of how they can adequately address labour law risks in their supply and value chains. However, it is also worthwhile for companies to engage with core labour standards beyond the legal framework. A commitment to core labour standards can improve your supplier relationships, make supply chains more resilient, reduce risks and increase your attractiveness to applicants. The UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein offers initial starting points, support, and guidance. - SDGs| UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein
We support companies in the implementation of the SDGs through various formats such as e-learning, tools, and training programmes. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS In 2015, all 193 member states of the United Nations adopted a plan for achieving a better future for all — a total of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs characterize the sustainability debate at national and international levels. As a global goals system, the SDGs provide a common language and a compass for the challenges of the 21st century. The implementation target year for these is 2030. In addition to the commitment of politicians and civil society, the business community is also required to master these challenges. The private sector plays an enormous role in tackling these global challenges. Companies must increasingly leverage their resources to advance the SDGs. There are only a few years left to implement the 2030 Agenda. In view of the slow progress to date, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for a ‘Decade of Action’ at the beginning of 2020 and mandated the UN Global Compact to mobilize the business community. The UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein is responding to this call by supporting companies in the interpretation and implementation of the SDGs through various formats such as e-learning, tools, and training programmes. - SOCIAL | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein
The business community has a responsibility to uphold human rights and labour standards both in the workplace and more broadly along its entire value chain Human Rights The idea of human rights is as simple as it is powerful: That all people have a right to be treated with dignity. Businesses often impact the human rights of their employees and contract workers, workers in their supply chains, the communities around their operations and even the end users of their products or services. Whether directly or indirectly, they impact virtually the entire spectrum of internationally recognized human rights. As a result, companies have both a responsibility and an opportunity to advance human rights across operations, supply chains and beyond. Is your company able to know and show that it supports and respects the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights, and that it is not complicit in human rights abuses? We offer a wide range of resources including e-learning & webinar recordings, tools & publications and training programmes as well as exchange opportunities to support you in implementing human rights due diligence processes no matter where you are in your sustainability journey. - Just Transition | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein
The UNGC helps businesses to get started in planning for a just transition. Just Transition A just transition ensures that environmentally sustainable economies are promoted in a way that is as fair and inclusive as possible to everyone concerned, creating decent work opportunities and leaving no one behind. It aims to ensure that the transition to net-zero emissions and climate resilience is orderly, inclusive and just. Businesses have a crucial role to achieve a just transition: Private sector support for a just transition contributes to environmental goals, as well as economic growth and social development, through robust company practices, social dialogue, advocacy and partnerships . As key players in shaping the transition to a lower-emission and climate-friendly economy, companies can make an important contribution to ensuring that the social and human rights implications of this transition are also taken into account: For example, the International Labour Organization (ILO) expects 78 million new jobs to be created by 2030 as a result of investment in the circular economy, but also 71 million jobs to be lost. The commitment to a just transition therefore makes it possible to tackle key issues of human rights and environmental due diligence in parallel. In addition, measures to ensure a just transition also contribute to better management of the impact of emissions reductions, increased social support for climate action and sustainability and good stakeholder relations. Advancing a just transition is a priority area for the UN Global Compact. Business action on just transition begins from a foundation of responsible business conduct and respect for human and labour rights, supported by the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact . Building on the guiding principles of just transition established in the International Labour Organization’s Just Transition Guidelines, the UN Global Compact helps businesses to get started in planning for a just transition. - Anti-Corruption | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein
We offer resources and a platform for exchange & dialogue to support companies in preventing corruption. Anti-Corruption Corruption exists in various forms in almost all companies, industries and countries. Increased business and transaction costs, distorted competition and reduced economic growth are just some of the consequences. Through compliance and adherence to the rules, companies can act against fraud, bribery, extortion and other forms of corruption. As value chains become more complex and diverse, and we see a range of challenges being integrated including the connections between human rights, labour issues, environment and corruption, businesses need to understand the risks and drivers of corruption — and how to address them within their organizations. The Tenth Principle of the UN Global Compact therefore calls on companies to take a stand against all forms of corruption. Against the backdrop of increasingly demanding anti-corruption regulations in countries around the world, corruption also increasingly represents a legal and reputational risk for companies. Investors are also paying more attention to corruption as a potential risk that destabilises internal company structures and increases transaction costs. The UN Global Compact and its partners therefore offer resources and platform for exchange and dialogue at national and global level to support companies in preventing corruption. - Ocean Stewardship | UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein
Implement successful water stewardship with our useful resources such as e-learnings, publications, and exchange opportunities. Ocean Stewardship Oceans are crucial to the well-being and prosperity of humankind - whether for the production of food, energy, raw materials or transport. They play a critical and unique role in addressing the twin crises of biodiversity and climate change that threaten our very existence. But the oceans are in urgent need of protection and restoration. Covering some 70% of the earth’s surface, oceans are threatened by rising temperatures, acidification, extraction and depletion of resources, and pollution in many forms. Research shows ocean mitigation solutions could reduce the greenhouse gas emissions gap by as much as one-fifth as we seek a path to limiting global temperatures to a 1.5° C increase by 2050. Businesses can often have a direct or indirect impact on the oceans and have a responsibility to work together towards sustainable ocean management. By doing so, they can both reduce their impact on the oceans and create new business opportunities in the long term. In collaboration with over 300 stakeholders, the UN Global Compact has developed nine Sustainable Ocean Principles that provide companies with a framework for responsible business practices. By signing the principles, companies can set an example and receive a framework for integrating ocean-related challenges into their strategy.
